Simple Wedding Cakes : Making a single-tier cake a work of art!

Silver Whisk Bake Shop | Boston Wedding cake designer

In this time of micro-weddings, elopements, and "minimonies", many brides in the Facebook groups I am a part of find themselves in need of flair and style on a smaller scale. With fewer guests to serve, many brides are looking for small, single-tier cakes that are not only delicious to eat but glorious to behold as well. While I consider myself a wedding cake aficionado when it comes to eating, I certainly am not privy to all the trade tips as it pertains to the style and creation of cakes as works of art. So I decided to obtain some answers by checking in with my girl Nancy of Silver Whisk Bake Shop.

Silver Whisk Bake Shop is a boutique confectionery shop in Boston. From custom petite fours to their designer cake collection, the folks at Silver Whisk Shop are masters of art and beauty. I asked Nancy to share a few pointers on how to get the most “Wow factor” for your buck with a simple cake. Here are 4 tips she shared with me:

Tip 1. Make it Tall!

-For a grander presentation without having to add another tier, consider having a single tier cake that’s taller in height compared to a standard height cake. Why? Because height draws the eyes in for attention and it is beautiful!

2. Ham it up for the camera!

Make your cake-cutting photos gorgeous! If you have less than 10 guests (even if it’s just the two of you love birds!) and you don’t want your cake to be tiny and look too “mini” in your photos, choose a cake that’s at least 6 inches in diameter. The appearance of that cake size in front of a fabulous couple like yourself will look justttt right!

3. Go big or go home!

A single tier cake can be as simple or as detailed as you’d like! Just because it’s a single tier doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it.

  • Boho chic = semi naked cake with fresh greenery,

  • Simple and elegant = smooth buttercream finish adorned with your wedding flowers,

  • Detailed and unique = marble look, intricate buttercream piping... the list goes on!

4. Add a cake topper!

Many couples add a custom cake topper which you can easily find on Etsy or ask a local cake designer if they can create one for you. I’ve seen toppers that range from 3D figurines of a couple (and their pets!) to stunningly decorated monograms. Personalize it to your taste.
